How to create a Google Ads account, step by step
Creating a Google Ads account takes about 15 minutes, but a few choices you make on the way are permanent. This guide walks you through the setup in order and points out where beginners usually lose money.
What you need before you start
Google Ads is Google's advertising platform. You write short text ads, choose the searches you want to appear for, and pay when someone clicks. Before you sign up, have these three things ready.
- A Google account. A Gmail address works, or any email you have registered as a Google account. Use one you will keep long term, ideally a business address, not a personal one you might lose access to.
- A place to send people. Usually your website. If you do not have one, a Google Business Profile (your listing on Google Maps) can work for calls and directions, but a simple website with your services, phone number and a contact form gives you far more control.
- A payment method. A credit or debit card in the name of the business, or bank details if your country supports them.
- Basic business details: legal business name, address and tax information if you have it. Google may ask for these during billing setup or later for verification.
Step 1: Go to ads.google.com and start the sign-up
Open https://ads.google.com and click Start now. Sign in with the Google account you chose. Google then asks a few questions about your business: name, website, and what you want to achieve.
Here is the first thing to know: Google is designed to move you straight into creating a campaign. The default flow asks for a goal, an ad, keywords and a budget, and at the end it asks for payment details. If you complete it, you may end up with a live campaign running on settings you did not choose.
Step 2: Create the account without launching a campaign
For most beginners it is better to create the account first and build the first campaign calmly afterwards. Google does not always make this option obvious, and the wording changes from time to time, so look for one of these:
- A link such as
Switch to Expert Modeon the first screens. Expert Mode gives you the full interface instead of the simplified Smart campaign experience. - After switching, an option to create an account without a campaign, sometimes shown as a small link under the list of campaign goals.
- If you do not see either, look for a skip or "create later" option before the payment step. Google updates this flow often, so the exact label may differ from what you read here.
Step 3: Choose billing country, time zone and currency carefully
Next Google asks for your billing country, time zone and currency. These three settings cannot be changed after the account is created. If you get one wrong, the only fix is to create a new account.
Pick the country where your business is registered and pays its bills. Pick the time zone where you work, because daily budgets, ad schedules and reports all reset at midnight in that time zone. Pick the currency you want to be charged in, usually your local one. A US business should choose US dollars, a business in Spain euros, a business in Mexico Mexican pesos, and so on.
Step 4: Set up billing and payments
Billing in Google Ads is tied to a payments profile. This is where your business name, address and payment method are stored. If you already pay Google for something else, such as Google Workspace, you may be offered an existing profile. Make sure it is the business profile, not a personal one.
Most new accounts use automatic payments. Google charges your card after you reach a billing threshold or at the end of the month, whichever comes first. Some countries also offer manual payments, where you add money in advance and ads stop when the balance runs out. Manual payments are a good safety net if you are nervous about overspending.
Adding a payment method does not cost anything by itself. You are only charged when ads run and get clicks.
Step 5: Complete advertiser verification if asked
Google may ask you to verify your identity or your business, either right away or a few weeks after you start advertising. You will see a notice in the account with a deadline. The process usually involves confirming your legal name and uploading a document such as a business registration or ID.
Do not ignore this message. If verification is not completed before the deadline, your ads can be paused.
Manager accounts for agencies
If you are an agency or freelancer managing several businesses, create a manager account (often called an MCC) and link client accounts to it, instead of logging in to each one separately.
Common mistakes that cost money
These are the problems we see most often in accounts created by first-time advertisers:
- Accidentally launching a Smart campaign. If you follow the default flow to the end, Google may start a simplified campaign with broad targeting and an automatic budget. Check the
Campaignspage right after sign-up and pause anything you did not intend to run. - Wrong currency or time zone. Both are permanent. A wrong time zone makes your daily reports and ad schedule confusing; a wrong currency means paying conversion fees on every charge.
- Using a personal email that someone may leave with. If an employee or a former agency owns the login, you can lose access to your own ad history. Keep admin access on an address the business controls.
- Not linking Google Analytics 4. GA4 shows what people do after they click. Link it from the
Linked accountssection of the Tools menu so you can see which ads bring real customers. - Skipping conversion tracking. Without it, Google cannot tell which clicks became calls or leads, and you cannot tell either. Set it up before your first campaign goes live.
What to do next
Once the account exists, you have no campaigns, no spending and no risk. The next steps are to decide how much to spend and then build your first Search campaign. Read how much Google Ads costs next, so you start with a budget that fits your business and enough data to learn from.
Let an AI assistant help
After the account is created, you can connect it to an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT and ask questions in plain language, like "what should my first campaign look like?" or "why is this keyword expensive?". With Ads Connector you sign in with Google at https://ads-connector.com, connect Google Ads, and paste https://ads-connector.com/mcp into your AI client. Anything the assistant creates starts paused, so nothing spends until you confirm.
FAQ
Is it free to create a Google Ads account?
Yes. Creating the account and adding a payment method costs nothing. You only pay when your ads run and someone clicks, up to the budget you set.
Can I create a Google Ads account without a campaign?
Yes. Switch to Expert Mode during sign-up and look for the option to create the account without a campaign. The exact wording changes, but the option is usually there.
Can I change the currency or time zone later?
No. Billing country, currency and time zone are fixed once the account is created. If they are wrong, you need to create a new account.
Do I need a website to use Google Ads?
It is strongly recommended. Some campaign types can send people to a Google Business Profile or just show your phone number, but a website lets you track leads and gives Google more information about your business.
Why is Google asking me to verify my identity?
Google verifies advertisers to reduce fraud. Complete it before the deadline shown in your account, usually by confirming your legal name and uploading a document, or your ads may be paused.
Should I let an agency create the account for me?
You can, but make sure the account is owned by an email your business controls and that you have admin access. That way you keep your data if you change agencies.
